DETROIT — The Toyota FT-EV II looks like an Imperial stormtrooper helmet and has steampunk-inspired controls. But the coolest thing about it is it shows the French aren’t the only ones who occasionally drop acid when designing concept cars.

Toyota brought the wild “What if…” electric car to the North American International Auto Show after unveiling it a few months ago at the Tokyo auto show. It was our first chance to see the car, and it left us scratching our heads.

It isn’t the exterior that’s trippy — the FT-EV II is a pretty slick riff on the Toyota iQ microcar we love so much. It’s the interior that makes you say, “WTF?” Toyota tossed the steering wheel, the pedals, even the dashboard to maximize interior room. They’re replaced with a pair of joysticks and a pair of gauges that look like gyroscopes.

The FT-EV II was by far the wildest concept at the show, and therefore the perfect candidate for our WTF? Photo Caption Contest. You know the rules: Use the Reddit widget below to write a caption and vote for your favorite. Whoever writes the winning caption gets a prize from the Autopia Automotive Swag Pile provided you include your e-mail address. Got that? No e-mail address, no prize.

More pics, including one of the interior, after the jump to further inspire you.
