TORONTO, Ont. (February 16, 2017) — Forty one vehicles made their Canadian debuts Thursday during Media Preview Day at the 2017 Canadian International AutoShow, including the first-ever global vehicle premiere in the show’s 44-year history.
The world’s leading automotive manufacturers launched 25 new production vehicles and 16 concepts – five more than 2016 — over the course of the media tour that took hundreds of digital, broadcast and print journalists through the 1,000 cars and 650,000 square feet of show space at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The AutoShow opens to the public for its 10-day run on Friday, Feb. 17TH at noon.
“We’ve got an amazing lineup of vehicles this year from every major manufacturer in the country, which gives drivers a great opportunity to see all of the latest and greatest news models under one roof,” says Jason Campbell, General Manager of the AutoShow. “We’re looking forward to a fantastic 10 days and welcoming thousands of people a day through our doors.”
Highlights of the tour included Aston Martin pulling the wraps off the Aston Martin-Red Bull concept hypercar AM-RB 001 for its first appearance in North America — and global auto show debut.
Dr. Andy Palmer, President and CEO of Aston Martin, also announced the luxury sports car maker will be partnering with Canadian firm Multimatic of Markham, ON to manufacture the AM-RB 001 when it goes into production.
With lightweight construction paramount, the AM-RB 001’s MonoCell is constructed from carbon fibre by world-leading composite experts, Multimatic. A long-standing technology partner on projects such as One-77 and Aston Martin Vulcan, Multimatic will combine its unrivalled manufacturing experience with Red Bull Advanced Technologies’ knowledge gained from the design and build of ultra-competitive, championship-winning Formula One cars.
Production of the AM-RB 001 will be strictly limited to only 150 cars, including prototypes and track-only versions. First deliveries will commence in 2019.
Hyundai also gave the world a first look at its all-new subcompact 2018 Accent — the AutoShow’s first global premiere. Despite leading the subcompact market for the past eight years straight, the Accent gets a significant redesign and refinements for 2018.
The day began with the announcement of the Volkswagen Golf (Alltrack) as the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada 2017 Canadian Car of the Year, while the Subaru Forester took home the hardware as 2017 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.
